Defining High Risk vs Low Risk Volunteers

WWFY recognizes a differentiation between volunteers and what access they will need.

WWFY recognizes a differentiation between volunteers and what access they will need. To help define this, WWFY considers volunteers as a High-Risk volunteer or a Low-Risk volunteer which is defined below. Supervisors are responsible for completing this form and submitting it to Human Resources before a volunteer begins their assignment.   

High-Risk Volunteers:  

  • Interact often or over an extended period with members.  
  • May supervise members without an employee present.  
  • Working with or supervising children. 
  • Will be volunteering frequently. 
  • Limited supervision.  
  • Examples include volunteer program instructor, regularly scheduled volunteer coach. 
  • Must complete all required training like regular staff who oversee children in WWFY programs.  

Low-Risk Volunteers: 

  • Typically interacts with members in the presence of an employee. 
  • Usually only volunteering at a one-time event. 
  • Limited time to develop relationships with members. 
  • Minimal interactions with children; primarily working with adults. 
  • Supervisor often present and observing.  

All volunteers must complete a background screening, volunteer application, review and sign Volunteer Code of Conduct and Volunteer agreement. In addition, High Access volunteers are required to complete the Child Abuse Prevention Training in Redwoods.
